Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Celebration

Celebrating the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. has become an annual IMA tradition, while acknowledging the importance of creativity in our daily lives. Spend the day exploring the galleries with the docents, playing art-related games and making some of your own art.

Art-making Activities for All Ages

Community Paper Quilt: Use traditional African symbols to design a paper swatch for our community paper quilt. In writing, include what you hope to hand down as a family heirloom on the back of your swatch. Located in Pulliam Great Hall.

Native American and African Symbol Rubbings: Create a colorful print using traditional Adinkra stamps. Located on level 3 & level 4.

Bead-making: Stop by Star Studio on level 2 for bead making.

Scheduled Tours

  • 11:30-12 pm: Realization of the Deferred Dream: African-American artists at the IMA
  • 12:30-1 pm: Ancestors and Leaders – A Tour of the African Collection
  • 1:30-2 pm: Perceptions of America
  • 2:30-3 pm: Looking at Contemporary Art
  • 3:30-4 pm: Crowd Pleasers in the Late European Collection
    All tours will begin on the second floor to the right of the Welcome Desk..

Khabir the Storyteller

Kabir the Storyteller

From 1- 2 pm, hear a storytelling performance about the true story of a prince from Guinea, West Africa, who survived servitude in 1800s America.

Dr. Djo Drumming Performance
From 4-5 pm, in The Toby, listen to a free performance of West African drumming in celebration of the closing of Dynasty and Divinity: Ife Art in Ancient Nigeria. Dr. Djo Bi is a master hard drummer from Côte D’Ivoire, West Africa. He has performed widely in Europe and the U.S.

Special Exhibition Entry & Docent Stations
Free admission to Dynasty and Divinity: Ife Art in Ancient Nigeria and Art of the American Indians: The Thaw Collection. IMA docents will be stationed throughout the galleries to answer your art questions.

IMA Art Carts
The Exploring Art Basics Cart will be located on level 2 and the Asian Art & African Art Carts will be stationed on level 3.

Art Search & Find Game
Pick up a gallery art game at the level 2 information desk and explore the IMA galleries

Food and Shopping
Grab coffee or a bite to eat in Nourish Café, located on the ground floor, and shop at the Museum Store for books, games, unique items for the home and more. The Madeline F. Edler Greenhouse also will be open from 11 am to 3 pm offering a variety of garden-related items and post-holiday markdowns.

Free Parking

All parking will be free on this day. In addition to parking at the IMA, additional parking will be available at Light of the World Christian Church, 4646 Michigan Road. Free shuttle service between the two locations will run until 5:30 pm.
